17. Max Richter - Trees
Richter may not have been quite so well known in 2004 as he is today, but his second album, The Blue Notebook, was still just as powerful and well-formed as any of his work since. A “classical” composer, Richter’s work is firmly rooted in traditional melody and progression. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who chase novelty and create wildly heady music on the cutting edge of music theory, Richter simply fuses modern electronic elements into his arrangements. The influence of Brian Eno is evident, as is, to a lesser extent, American Minimalism. Though it’s difficult to isolate a standout track on such a cohesive album, the climactic penultimate track, “The Trees” is perhaps the most representative of the album’s beauty and haunting melodies.
