Haven Of Mercy (25 Years Strictly Country Magazine)
Haven of Mercy is dedicated to the memory of Charles Sawtelle, and to all our friends who have shown the way. I wrote it in 1985 after a visit to a magical place in Mendocino County, CA, somewhere between Anchor Bay and Point Arena.
(This was recorded in Bb, with the capo on the third fret and played out of the G position on the guitar)
VERSE 1 G C G Em D G At the end of just another day, that's when I miss her most G C G Em D When her memories gather 'round me like old familiar ghosts G C G Em D G Then high above this rocky coast, there's a place that I can go C G Em C D G To heal the wounds of a heartbreak, and soothe a lovesick soul
CHORUS
C G Em D G I can hear the angels singing, and I feel near, my God, to thee,
C G Em D As I watch the sun a-sinking below me in the sea
G C G Em D G C The tall trees gather 'round me, whispering, "Pilgrim, welcome home,"
G Em C D G Sweet haven of mercy, sweet peace for my soul
VERSE 2
The hawk hangs above me, the raven glides below
The quail has found a hiding place in the woods so dark and low
And I'm like a tiny sparrow, who's found a place to nest
