And, with his sickle keen
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath

'Shall I have naught that is fair?', saith he

'Dear tokens of the earth are they
Where he was once a child

And the mother gave, in tears and pain,
The flowers she most did love
She knew she would find them all again
In the fields of light above

Есть жнец, называют Смертью его.
Колосья он острым серпом
Срезает под корень вместе с травой,
Не брезгует даже цветком.
"Лишь зрелые злаки я вправе жать,-
Сказал он, -Не цвет полевой.
И хоть мне цветы эти искренне жаль,
Но я заберу их с собой".
И он со слезами в глазах целовал
Поникшие их лепестки,
Для Господа рая в снопы вязал
Он те полевые цветки.
"Господь будет рад весёлым цветам,-
С улыбкою жнец прошептал,-
Он вспомнит места на Земле, где Сам
Когда-то ребёнком играл.
Я их отнесу, чтоб в раю цвели
Вовеки цветы полевые.
Когда-нибудь белые ризы свои
Цветами украсят святые".
Ему отдала скорбящая мать
Охапку любимых цветов,
Ведь знала она, что найдёт их опять
Живыми средь райских лугов.
Не жнец жестокий и злой погубил
Цветы в этот день роковой.
То ангел небесный наш мир посетил,
Чтоб в рай унести их с собой.
