Sometimes I feel that I am very unlucky. Have you ever experienced a really unlucky day? Of course. I have unlucky days all the time. But, to answer your question, yes. I had one very unlucky day about five years ago. I still remember it. What were you doing before that day? I was training to be a jockey. A jockey rides horses in races. I was riding horses every day, and I hoped one day to ride in a lot of races. I had already ridden in a few small races. I had never won, but I usually came about fifth or sixth in the race. I was still very inexperienced. And what happened on that day? Well, the owner of a good horse asked me to ride in quite a big race. It was my first chance to do well. I was very excited, and I felt sure that I could win this race. The horse was very talented, and very fast. That morning, I woke up very early. I had a shower and ate my breakfast. I still had lots of time. I was told to arrive at the racecourse at one o’ clock in the afternoon, because the race started at two. I lived about one hour away from the racecourse. All morning, I did some tasks, and then I got into my car to drive to the racecourse. I was a little late, but I thought I still had lots of time. On the way to the racecourse, I saw a huge lorry blocking the road. The lorry had crashed, and the driver was waiting for some help to arrive. I tried to help him move the lorry, but it was no use. It was completely stuck. I was very worried, because I knew I was late. I started to go back the other way in my car, but the alternative route was much longer. When I arrived at the racecourse it was a quarter to two. Another jockey was sitting on my horse. I was too late. The other jockey won the race on my horse. After that, the owner of the horse always asked him to ride his horse. I lost my chance. Oh dear. That’s very unlucky. Did you expect such misfortune? No, I didn’t. I am normally very careful. It was just very bad luck. Nobody would have expected a lorry to crash on a small road on that day at that time. How do you see your bad luck now? Actually, I think was fortunate. I gave up racing, and now I have another job which I enjoy much more. At the time, though, I was very unhappy. Has that day influenced your life? Of course. I now work for a construction firm, and I have good career prospects and a good salary. When I was a jockey, my future was very uncertain. My job depended on luck. Now, my job and my future depend on my abilities. What would you do in future to prevent such bad luck? I would be more prepared, and arrive earlier than required.
