21. Pelican - Australasia
In their pomp, Pelican were the top of the tree when it came to metal instrumentals. "Australasia," title track of possibly their finest record, encapsulates everything that made them one of the best acts in their field. Opening in a customarily heavy, dark fashion, the first half of the track shows off their rock credentials with startling power. The second half is almost dream like, and it demonstrates that the band are far from one dimensional and just why they appeal to metal fans and post-rock fans alike. "Australasia" accomplishes the rare balancing act of being sophisticated yet brutal, and it greatly rewards listeners who fancy music on both ends of the spectrum. More recent releases have perhaps dented their reputation, but this is a fine reminder of what Pelican are capable of. (Matt Fernell)
