Every month, I spend too much money. It’s so difficult to control my spending. You’re good with money. How much do you get a month?
Not very much. I get a monthly salary of about six hundred pounds a month.
How much of that do you use for bills?
Well, I pay about two hundred pounds for my rent. That is my biggest expense. After that, I pay thirty pounds a month for electricity and forty pounds for gas.
I find my biggest expense is food. I love food, and I always go to expensive shops. How much do you spend on food?
That’s your problem. You always buy expensive food. I cook a lot, but I go to the markets, where the food is cheaper. I normally spend about sixty pounds a month on food.
What kind of food do you buy?
Vegetables, such as carrots and potatoes. I also buy meat from the butcher’s. I rarely go to the supermarket, where the food is often quite expensive.
You always have nice clothes. Do you spend much on clothes?
Not very much. I don’t enjoy shopping, so I try to do it only when I have to. Last month, I spent fifty pounds on clothes. That’s not very much.
Wow! What did you buy?
A jacket. I’m wearing it now.
What about transport? Do you spend much on transport?
Not really. I cycle everywhere. But when I do use transport, I pay around twenty pounds a month. It’s my smallest expense.
What kind of transport is that?
I take the train sometimes to see my parents in the countryside. Sometimes, I catch the bus into the centre of town when I am going to meet friends. But normally I just use my bike. It is the easiest way to get around town. I don’t have to wait in traffic, and it is clean and efficient to use.
I spend too much money on entertainment. I go the cinema a lot. Do you spend much on entertainment?
Not much. I spend about forty pounds a month on entertainment.
What do you normally do for entertainment?
Like you, I sometimes go to the cinema. But most of my entertainment is free. I enjoy sports. I cycle a lot, I walk in the hills, and I meet with friends. I spend a bit of money in cafes and places like that.
I want to start saving money. All my friends have savings, but I don’t. Do you have much money left to save?
It depends. I usually save about one hundred pounds a month. Sometimes, I save less, particularly when I have had to pay for a lot of things. But sometimes I save more. I am very careful with my money. I think it is very important to save.
