I have been looking for a new job for several weeks, and I can’t find anything that interests me. You seem happy - what’s your job?
I work as an accountant. Yes, you’re right - I am happy with my job. It is quite challenging, and I have always wanted to do this.
Did you have to do any special training for your job? What qualifications do you have?
Accountancy training is very intense. First, you study a related subject at university or college. In your first job, you must also study very hard for accountancy exams. After three years, you take your final exam. Then you can become a chartered accountant. I am a chartered accountant, but it was very hard work to achieve that.
Who do you work for?
A company called Deloitte. It is one of the biggest accountancy firms in the world.
You still seem very young. Have you been doing this job for a long time?
No, not at all. I have been an accountant for just five years. But it feels like a very long time!
It sounds like an interesting job. What do you have to do?
My typical day will probably sound quite boring to you. I audit the accounts of companies. That means that I speak to different companies, and help them add up all their figures for the year. I then check that they have made the correct calculations, and have presented their financial position honestly to the public.
Do you have to start very early?
Yes, I come into work at about eight o’ clock in the morning. It is a very long day.
Do you finish late?
Usually. I finish around six or seven o’ clock in the evening.
It must be quite tiring. Do you have days off?
Of course. Everybody has a day off. I don’t work weekends. Occasionally, I have to work weekends if we have a very big task. But then I can take another day off during the week as compensation.
I am looking for a job with a good salary. What do you get paid?
You can’t ask that! That’s private.
Are you happy with your salary?
I’m happy enough. I get a pay rise once a year. I have enough money to live on. I can pay my rent, and pay for a holiday once a year. I think that’s all I need.
I see. Are you happy with your job generally?
Yes, I trained for this job for a long time, and it is very satisfying when I do it well. I meet a lot of different people, and I find out how businesses work. It is a good job. I will not do it forever. After three or maybe four years, I will probably look for something a little different.
