Hello! I haven’t seen you around. You’re new here, aren’t you? My name’s Janet. Have you just moved here? Where have you come from?
Oh, hello! I’m Jonathan. Yes, you’re right, I have just moved here. I was living in the countryside before, in a small village near the Lake District. It is a mountainous area in the north of England. You probably know it - lots of people go there on holiday.
I’ve never been there. Why did you leave?
I found a new job in London, and I had to move. I am starting a new job with a law firm in two weeks.
How interesting! What did you do in your old place?
I only recently finished university, so I was living with my parents. They live on a farm, and I helped them with the jobs on the farm. You know - I milked the cows, I cleaned their shed, I fixed fences, cleared the drains and other things like that.
I hope you like it here. It will be quite different. What did you like the most where you were before?
The outdoors. It is a very beautiful area, and I enjoyed working outside. I also liked working with animals, particularly with horses.
Was there anything bad about it?
Of course. It was very hard work! And animals can be very dirty. We owned several cows, which created a lot of mess. Sometimes the animals became angry, and then they could be quite dangerous.
Did you have many friends where you lived?
Not many. We lived several miles outside of the village. Many of my friends have moved to bigger cities. I have many friends here in London, who I will establish contact with again. It was often quite lonely on the farm. Our nearest neighbours lived seven miles away.
I hope you will enjoy it here. It can be a very exciting place. Do you think you will miss your old place?
Of course I will miss it. I will miss my parents particularly. They are quite elderly now, and I want to help them. And I will miss my horses. I had two very nice horses, and my parents will probably sell them now because I will not be able to ride them anymore.
Which place do you prefer?
It’s difficult to say. I have not lived in London very long, and I do not yet know many people. When I start my new job, I will start to meet more people, and my life here will become more interesting. But I think I will always prefer my old home.
Why’s that?
The countryside is very beautiful, and it is peaceful there. Here in London, everybody is very busy, and there are too many people. I will enjoy it for a few years, but eventually I will want to return to the countryside.
