4. Do Make Say Think - Frederica
For all those who think that run-of-the-mill crescendo-core post-rock outfits feel just a bit too obvious in their emotional manipulations, Do Make Say Think comes as a magnificent savior. “Fredericia,” perhaps the band's greatest song on what is perhaps its greatest album, is an exercise in gradual and asymmetrical change. What this means is that the different elements of the song will change at different rates – not only the instruments but also the compositional elements themselves – some now racing ahead, others now lingering behind, almost trapped in stasis, until eventually the end brings them back into unison. The result is a work of subtle magic, always keeping us on our toes and demonstrating the composition prowess of DMST. (Tom Butcher)
