This is one of those recordings that incorporates jazz and other idioms – but I felt like it should be posted here so that as many people as possible can partake of it. What actually brought it to mind for me this week was listening to Ascent by the Bernardo Sassetti Trio2 and hearing a snatch of melody that reminded me of something on this recording.
Anders Koppel is (I believe) classically trained – in the 1970s he participated in the great Danish ensemble Bazaar, whose music drew on jazz, classical and rock influences, as well as ethnic melodies and rhythms. If you should run across any of their recordings, I urge you to check them out – great music. Some of the pieces on this LP ( * ) were composed for Peter Watkins’ film Aftenlandet. You can get an idea of the diversity of sounds just by reading the credits – Peter Bastian, who co-arranged the music with Koppel, was also a member of Bazaar, as was percussionist / guitarist Mehmet Ozan…so ? of Bazaar appear here. This is a vinyl rip by someone unknown…my upload…it’s relatively quiet, more than worthwhile to share. As far as I know, it’s never been released on CD…but I could be wrong about that. These days, Koppel is writing mainly for orchestras in a classical vein that sometimes incorporates instruments from outside the orchestra, such as marimba.
