Movie stardom relied on the fact that Cy was an American and not an English director. And the length of the bar at the Prince of Wales theatre in the west end - 'cause it's a very long bar'. And that's where he was auditioning.

And I went to play a cockney corporal, and when I got there he had already given it to my friend James Booth. Another real cockney like myself.

And when I was walking out I got right to the door, and he said "You don't look like a cockney to me." He said "You don't really look that tough or anything." He said "You look like one of those upper-crust officers. Can you do that?"
