February 28th, 1964 (BBC Piccadilly Studios, London): On the radio show From Us To You, announcer Alan Freeman tries to interview Paul before the band performs their next number; John, however, is cheekily determined to cram in a plug for In His Own Write.
FREEMAN: Paul.
PAUL: Yes.
FREEMAN: Now listen.
PAUL: Yes.
FREEMAN: Re your singing, do you have any particular idol that you’ve ever copied your singing style from?
PAUL: Um—
JOHN: [in background] What about my book, then? [Paul laughs]
FREEMAN: John, go away.
JOHN: [trailing off] What about my book? What about my book…
PAUL: I used to be sort of influenced by Elvis in the old days, I think.
FREEMAN: Really?
PAUL: Yeah, used to love him. Chuck Berry—
JOHN: [yelling] What about my book, then!
PAUL: —Carl Perkins, and uh, Marvin Gaye and things. Can’t really sing like him, you know. I like him, though. Love him.
JOHN: [in background; muttering] What about it? Could leave us a plug, though, couldn’t he…
FREEMAN: Paul, what about singing ‘Til There Was You’?
PAUL: Alright, then.
FREEMAN: You – not meaning John, who’s writing a book, which we’ll talk about later on.
PAUL: [innocent] I’ve heard about that book, somewhere.
