Это первая запись со времени обращения Дилана в христианство, все песни на альбоме либо выражают его личное отношение к вере, либо важность непосредственно христианского учения. Библейская основа альбома отпугнула многих поклонников Боба, с другой стороны, многие христиане прониклись его творчеством благодаря этой записи.
Для записи альбома были привлечены Марк Нопфлер (Mark Knopfler) и Джерри Векслер (Jerry Wexler).
Дилан впервые услышал Марка на сингле Sultans of Swing. Чуть позже, 29 марта 1979, он попал на концерт Dire Straits в Лос Анджелесе. После выступления Боб подошел к Нопфлеру и попросил принять участие в записи его альбома. Марк сразу согласился, даже не поинтересовавшись гонораром. В целом, альбом получил долю звучания Dire Straits – Нопфлеровская гитара узнаваема и чувствуется на протяжении практически каждой композиции. Джерри Векслер же в очередной раз подтвердил свое огромное значение для музыкального мира, ибо альбом получился очень сильным. Альбом вообще превзошел все, что мог превзойти.
