Victims of Love Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi Music: Imai Hisashi
Still smiling like I'm frozen The warmth of your skin passing me by The beating of our hearts marks the hours Sighs mingling, kisses tormenting
Over and over Your voice, faintly panting "..don't let me go..." Petals, hot and trembling A dream so pure it makes me want to die
At the tips of our tangled fingers Lie greenly glistening scars1 Tongues entwined, sliding in deep Ah, so sweet I could melt
When we hold each other, my heart falters When we comfort each other, it doesn’t last Quietly vanishing, lost down a hole in time My desire coloring the ocean red2
Over and over Your voice, faintly panting "..don't let me go..." Petals, hot and trembling
At the tips of our tangled fingers Lie greenly glistening scars Tongues entwined, sliding in deep Ah, so sweet I could melt
At the tips of our tangled fingers Lie greenly glistening scars Tongues entwined, sliding in deep Ah, so sweet I could melt
Who are you? Why is it? No matter where I go, I’m bound and tied Who are you? Why is it? No matter where I go, I'm broken down Who are you? Why is it? No matter where I go, I’m bound and tied I'm broken down I’m beaten I’m in pain
Note: The lines in italics appear only in the rearranged version the band performed at their Climax Together concert in 1991.
The title of this song may be a reference to the refrain of "Cascade" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, which goes, "love-lorn victims/love me in cascades." The song deals with similar themes of sexual ecstasy and despair.
When asked in the August 1988 issue of Fool’s Mate about this song, Sakurai said that what he wanted to convey was the emptiness he felt after sex. He said, “It’s kind of empty, even though it’s fun of course, but afterward, or when you remember it, it seems so futile. That feeling of nothing after you’ve finished up is what I wanted to express in ‘Victims of Love.’ Of course, I wanted to express the feelings of sex itself, but also the feeling after it’s done…I really wanted to, um, let that out, I could say.”
1) This is “green” as in young, or freshly inflicted. The first meaning of this word, “ao,” is “blue,” but it can also mean “green,” “fresh” or “inexperienced.”
2) The word “omoi,” which I translated here as “desire,” normally means “thoughts" or "feelings." However, in classical Japanese literature the word “omoi” referred to obsessive romantic love, and I think that’s the meaning Sakurai intended it to have in this context, especially spelled with this kanji.
