February commemorates both the born day and far-too-early passing of the great James DeWitt Yancey, better known as Jay Dee or J Dilla, and in what has now become tradition, an inundation of memorial mixes celebrating the groundbreaking producer’s monumental work. 10 years on since Jay Dee left us, however, the plethora Dilla tribute tracks – from both Jay’s closest collaborators and those simply inspired by his talents – represents a fine body of work unto itself. On the latest episode of Across 135th Street, Chairman Jefferson Mao collects some of the best of these homages in A Tribute to J Dilla Tributes (Mo Meta Dilla, if you will). These include cover versions and re-flips of Dilla classics (Robert Glasper’s rendition of E=MC2; D’Angelo vamping on Fall In Love, Seoul trio Bulsazzo’s drony, My Bloody Valentine-esque take on Time: Donut Of The Heart), reputable verbalizers (The Roots’ Black Thought and Dice Raw, DOOM and Guilty Simpson, Jay Elect, Ghostface) spitting over Donuts’ aural twists and turns, and as is only right given Jay’s ever-evolving, forward facing sound, original beats and compositions from contemporary studio artisans such as Knxwledge or Tall Black Guy, and close associates such as Madlib, Karriem Riggins, Erykah Badu alike – presented with love.
