I started writing this when I was still in my teens It was meant to be a love song From a spoiled and misunderstood boy To a special girl with a big chest and blue eyes We went to school together in the outskirts of nowhere Kicking at windows and throwing with stones We went through our teens feeling so low
Then with time it became more like a song of hurt An expression of longing and heartache With a bassline that I stole from Blur And a band from Sarah Records Don't remember what they're called but it was nothing special With an urge for rebellion in a town made of glass I was the best in my middle class
Then in my early twenties All there was left of that song that I used to write Was a dance beat played on keyboards And there was red in my eyes I wore a suit with a tie and worked until late Gambled on stocks, bonds and horses And took the girls out on a date Until a rainy night outside a club in Mayfair Arrested and expelled My childhood ended there
And down below where life is slow The underground, a brand new sound That's where I'm now just spitting out A stream of words, another round We got away, we made it out We travelled far, our time is now We drink the rain of sweet champagne We came to change the world again
And now it's the 2010's We share a Mies Van der Rohe chair and a bottle of sweet sparkling wine You just finished creating a mask Made out of plastic and love For me to wear with a butterfly and a cloak
And as much as I love you In my own twisted way For the mask your style It's just too much for me to have you here everyday Cause we're generation restless With commitment issues from hell Well at least that's my own diagnose But I think it must apply to you as well
So did you hear I started filming a documentary on my phone About these perplexed mid twenties that we go through on our own And partly together When we're suddenly drunk and in love On the night before the morning after When the feeling's gone and I'm broke And I know how you think it's the truth that I tell you When I ramble on about romance and those soft summer nights But you should never forget That though I think you're really cute That there are things in this world That are more important than you
