Charles-Valentin Alkan - Barcarolle: Assez lentemente, for piano in G minor (Recueil de Chants 3/6), Op. 65/6 | Текст песни

1886

French composer Charles-Valentin Alkan was one of the most enigmatic musical figures of the mid-Nineteenth Century. A virtuoso pianist, (judging by the finger-breaking difficulty of his compositions) Alkan made his debut in Paris in 1826. He was embraced by the artistic luminaries of the day (Frédéric Chopin, George Sand, Alexandre Dumas, and Victor Hugo), yet he tended to float in and out of public view, disappearing for stretches at a time. His relative obscurity may be due to this elusive quality, and the fact that the music itself is rarely performed because of its extremely demanding nature.
The Barcarolle is from a group of pieces inspired by Felix Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. Introspective and ruminative, it offers musicality and subtlety in place of the demonic technique of many of his Alkan's other compositions. Its deceptive simplicity is underpinned with inventive harmonic twists and turns. For those who are familiar with the music of Chopin, Franz Liszt, and even Hector Berlioz, Alkan will be a rewarding discovery. Listen to his Grande Sonate \"Les Quatre Ages\", Op. 33 and Le festin d'Esope, Op. 39, No. 1.
