Traditional gospel song commonly played in jazz funerals. The song originated in the 19th century as a folk song, and became popular during the 1930s and 1940s. The first known recording is from 1941 by the Selah Jubilee Singers. The song influenced the style of Thomas A. Dorsey, the "father of gospel music".
