I have to confess I never cared much for Chet Baker, mostly because I had an image of him doing the same thing over and over again.
This 1979 recording, however, made me change my mind. Not that Chet does anything surprising, mind you : it's exactly the kind of quiet and romantic music you'd expect from him. But how well does he do it ! Although Chet never leaves the middle register of the trumpet, his improvisations are lyrical and well-built and his singing, well, let's say it's a perfect complement to his trumpet playing !
The sidemen, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass) and Doug Raney (guitar) serve Chet perfectly and contribute some very tasteful solos of their own. Finally, the recording quality and the mix are perfect, at least to my ears.
My conclusion : I guess Chet Baker wasn't so boring after all...
