Debussy's Cello Sonata is fruit among other works of the intensely creative four months the composer had spent at Pourville in the summer of 1915. Debussy described this period in a letter to Robert Godet in the words of a man who knows he is ill: ‘I write like a madman, or like someone condemned to die the following morning.’ During that time Debussy composed En blanc et noir for two pianos, the Études for solo piano, and two sonatas — the Cello Sonata and the Sonata for flute, viola and harp. Comprising a Prologue, a Serenade and a Finale, the Cello Sonata is stylistically and thematically reminiscent of the children's ballet, La Boite a joujoux, written in 1913, an it received its first performance on 24 March 1917 with Joseph Salmon on the cello and the composer at the piano. In a handwritten note on the work, Debussy insisted that ‘the pianist should never forget that he is not fighting the cello but accompanying it.’
