Your transformation was unlike anything I had ever seen.
Until that time you'd lived your life in the form of a story, one whose author forgot to pencil in the finer things. To see such a young soul have such an old, eroded heart was like waking up each morning to find that the darkness never left. Like the light came and went as you dreamt of its absence, leaving its footsteps in your dreams as if to tease you with your unfulfilled desires.
Yet somehow those distant dreams kept you here with us. Your hope for the future was never forced, leading us to believe that you knew something that no one else knew. And you did. You did.
I guess we never really stood still long enough to get a glimpse of what was really happening to you. It was easier to get lost in busy schedules and empty promises than to get lost with you and I swear if I was strong enough things could've been so different but we both know that I wasn't. We both know that I wasn't.
I'll always wonder whether or not the things that I kept inside would have swayed our sinking ship one way or another. Maybe somewhere down the line, that extra 'I love you' or 'I'm sorry' would hold much more weight than it initially seemed.

I broke you down to build you up.
You're better off now.

I was the butterfly that caused your perfect storm. I paved road that lead to your relapse and recovery. With one flap of my wings I pushed you off a cliff where you fell through hell in order to reach peace on the other side. I killed everything you had, carved out that heart of yours just to hold it in front of your face and let you watch me break it.
Sometimes it takes the slitting of ones throat to bleed out all the blackness, so use whatever is left of you as a tourniquet and stop the bleeding because scar tissue is something you've always been able to rely on. Don't let go of what you know, because one day what you know is all you'll have left. And you'll have to start again, start over.

We all look back on our lives and look for those defining moments, those moments where we finally took that step we'd be needing to take for too long. We all look to events, to seasons, to people to find a place to mark where those moments are but more often than not it's the little things that carry the weight. The extra words of affirmation or an honest answer can be more life changing than anything else.

So if ever you need me, I'll repair these broken wings for one final flight, one last lending of my heart before I retire for the night. And forever.
