a ROLL, in this usage a roll is a list of people wha are members of an organisation. As an example one common use in English is in the army when everyone wakes up in

the morning and they all come outside and stand at attention waiting to have the general see who's there and who's not, they take roll call they yell out everyones

name who's on the list and they say if there are here. So they are calling the roll, the list of people in the group.

DEVASTATED
literally devastated means completely destroied. It can be used literally as in "the city was devastaed by the attacking army", but you can also use it

figuratively, not literally when talking about feelings, for example. You might say, for example, the divorce totally devastated him. He didn't know what to do

afterword.Obviously he is not actually destroied but his feelings are shattered and he is very upset.

CUSTODY
literally CUSTODY is onwership. However it's a word that is usually used for things like being put into prison or with children. So when we say that the police

arrested somebody and put him in jail, you can also say they took him into custody. So literlly that would mean they took ownership of him, they own him now.

Obviously it doesn't actually mean that, but the figurative meaning is they now controll everything he does, he is in jail, they are controlling him, essentially they own this guy. For children you see it in cases of divorce as an example
