Out the window
Counting all the water towers you can see
Spend the frozen hours counting one, two, three
Wondering how many are for you and me
On the mantel
Two Petoskey stones, a diamond Indian head
And a pile of letters going east, north, west
Look into the mirror at your iris
Who is it you see?
Looking back at you
Does it look like me?
In the papers
All the tiny photographs holding time
Each a pale reminder of what's left behind
None of them are wider than a pair of dimes
In the morning
All the traces of the night have passed you by
Every water tower up against the sky
Can you see them through the window turning bright?
