How I fear the sea Its deepness chills my core Its mountains and its valleys Crests in constant roar It crashes hard against my hull The planks in rhythmic strain Foam is lashed across my desk The helm is turned in vain I’m at the mercy of this gale Lost in all its wrath From all sides I catch the sea With wind it tries my hatch Up I’m tossed, pitched and rolled My only thought is fear With stern awash and bilges full The strangest noise I hear A high-pitched sound in steady tone Its softness breaks the wind I cannot tell from where it comes It grows an eerie din It’s louder now, it fills my ears My ship begins to glow The wind is gone, and so the waves No more fear I show It’s peaceful now As deepness fills my eyes No need to take the helm The light is now my guide
