He marries young, around 23

Until his wife accidentally met
This average man’s girlfriend Paulette
Now he’s a divorced man in an average town

He left two kids in his old ex-home
They talk most days on the telephone
He likes to raise them every other weekend
And his dear Paulette’s now is ex-girlfriend
A common tail in an average town

He marries again for the company
Works, pays bills and surfs TV
He likes life better at a slower pace
Waitin’ on a pension, lettin’ young men race
Just killing time in an average town.

His skin turns old and his hair goes gray
His kids have kids and they move away
And now he thinks about days gone by
And why he did, all he did in his life
Like any old man in an average town.

He dies one day at 72
Quite naturally as most men do
His stone’s like many, not worst not best
Our average man’ll get an average rest
