Music For Alfonso The Wise (2005) Harmonia Mundi Rec
This record features music from the times of the king Alfonso X The Learned (1252-1284), best known for the production of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM). Despite the copious poetry from this time, no music survives to accompany it : existing melodies from period sources, especially the CSM, were employed to recreate a courtly context, as heard in the halls of Alphonso X. The sequence of seven Cantigas de Amigo is the only set of poems to have survived with music more or less intact.
Recorded December 16-18, 2002 at Wathen Hall, St. Paul's School for Boys, Hammersmith, London
