Discipline, aggression and depth. Combat started 10 years ago to this week. A pile of tracks had built up waiting for release and it felt like the right thing to do. So in autumn 2004 ScanOne and I found somehow ourselves in a soundproof chamber 37 floors above Soho, watching the “Every 7th Bullet” get cut to 12? at Alchemy Studios.

Roll on a decade later of gigs, radio shows, releases, podcasts and random adventures, I’ve been invited by Boothie to do a 100% label mix for Electronic Explorations. It was an interesting experience putting this together, revisiting old tracks and mashing them with forthcoming ones from a variety of new and established producers, nodding at influences from electro / techno / acid / oldskool hardcore / jungle / bashment / pre-2005 dubstep along the way, shaping their elements of aggression, depth and tension through the discipline the Combat’s soundsystem ethos. Am especially proud of the Ontal track “Discipline”, which captures exactly what the label’s vibe is about.

I rarely ever mix tracks only from one label, it goes against my DJ ethos which is to use whatever stuff is good, from anywhere. But I guess there’s enough variety to pick within the label’s history that the mix stays interesting. The scary thing is, at 47 tracks long we’re nowhere near halfway through all the music that’s been put out. These ones caught the eye at the time – I could have picked a totally different bunch of tunes, the mix would have taken a different form but still recognisably Combat. Enjoy.
