In our time, the respect and appreciation that people in the developed countries show towards old age is ever decreasing, mainly because they are only seeking material gain, where one’s immediate usability and productivity are more important than anything else. Such a viewpoint often undervalues aging people and leads to their own wondering whether their existence is of any use anymore. Aging people as such are vulnerable and are often exposed to some kind of psychological and physical abuse which additionally deepens their anxieties and leads to the sooner occurrence of insecurity, apprehension, and despair.

In our society there exists a need to support the belief that the duty of each humane civilisation is to respect and do the honour to elderly people and, despite their declining strength, to allow them to feel as equally important members of the society. We need to support any social initiative which enables elderly people to be socially engaged and active both in physical and mental aspects, to be helpful through conveying their experiences, knowledge, and skills to the posterity, whereas the social community needs to express the gratitude and to take care of them so as to provide them with a happy old age.

The song “Sepia” deals with certain aspects of gerontopsychiatry; it is about a lonely granny whom the posterity has abandoned and state human services have neglected, hence the only thing that she has left and that gives her the motivation to hold on are the photos which remind her of the good times spent with her husband. In its 9 or so minutes, “Sepia” depicts how even that last motivation is waning, since the granny starts showing the signs of dementia, her memories are fading away, leading to the inevitable end of any kind of existential motivation, that is to say, to the cessation of life – and all this is my honest criticism aimed at the society, namely, state institutions, but is also a reminder to the young that they need to take better care of the elderly.
