Впервые текст «Гринсливс» был опубликован в 1566 году. Этот вариант, дошедший до наших дней, включает 18 четверостиший и рефрен, однако обычно принято считать, что только четыре четверостишия и рефрен являются подлинными. Всего же существует огромное число куплетов (по некоторым оценкам до 1800), обыгрывающих одну и ту же тему — сетования автора на возлюбленную, покинувшую его несмотря на все его старания.
Эта композиция есть в репертуаре и у многих современных исполнителей. Среди них Элвис Пресли и широко известная группа Blackmore's Night.
