Dum pater familias, rex universorum,
donaret provincias jus apostolorum,
Iacobus Yspanias lux illustrat morum.

Primus ex apostolis martir Iherosolimis,
Iacobus egregio sacer est martirio.

Translation:

[The pilgrims' hymn]

When God the Father, the universal king, gave each apostle
authority over an [earthly] province, James, shining light of
virtue, was chosen to enlighten Spain.

First among apostles martyred Jerusalem, James is sanctified
By his illustrious martyrdom.

Galicia seeks James's holy aid;
his glory lights the way.
Let the assembly sing songs of worship:

'Herru Sanctiagu, Got Sanctiagu, Eultreya esuseya,
God help us.'

The whole world freely gives thanks to James, the champion of godliness;
Through his help he protects and comforts all, answering our prayers.

He who hopes to be freed from his bonds, for James's sake,
Calls on his name when in danger because of the miracles
