Enslaved - Sigmundskvadet | Текст песни

1. In the Faroe Islands there lived two chiefs,
Who were called Tróndur and Sigmund.

Men of Norway! Dance well in silence;
Stand up all,
Knights, men of Norway!
Dance well in silence.

2. Sigmund lived on Skúvoy,
Tróndur lived in the bay of Gøta.
---------------
3. So angry was Tróndur, he thought evilly:
Sigmund has spoiled our party.

4. Tróndur was sitting in his house, and said,
“Bring me Sjúrður Tollaksson!

5. Bring me Gutti and low Tór!”
Quickly, they were asked to come.

6. In came strong, brave men and said:
“What do you want, Tróndur, you called us?”

7. “I have asked you to come
In order to help bring about Sigmund’s death.

8. Sharpen spears and sharpen knives,
This concerns Sigmund’s life.

9. My best council is this:
We shall attack him in the night.”

10. They gathered boys and men
And walked to the shore, all at once.
---------------
11. Then Tróndur sailed between Skúvoy and Sandoy; the boat curved like a horned grebe.

12. The night was dark, and the boat went on,
And made it easy on Tróndur.

13. Dark was the night, and the boat was sailing,
They headed straight for Skúvoy.

14. No one knew when they arrived there,
Everything was as Tróndur wanted it to be.
---------------
15. They barraged hard with weapons,
So doors were quickly destroyed.

16. Sigmund suddenly awakes:
“Who ‘robs’ me in the night?”

17. “He, who is smashing your door,
It is the man you mocked before.”

18. Sigmund held his sword against,
Five heads fell on Tróndur’s foot.

19. Sigmund struck with power and violence,
Three heads fell on Tróndur’s shield.

20. Tróndur, he was eager to kill:
“You, set fire on Sigmund’s house!”

21. Sigmund speaks to his kin:
“Now, I have to escape from my house.”

22. Einar from Suðuroy, his kinsman Tór,
No one else with Sigmund went.

23. Sigmund’s wife stands by the wall:
“You hear me, Tróndur Gøtuskegg.

24. If you fight against woman and children,
You are more irascible than a bear.”

25. “You put out fire, you sting in knife!
I am only after Sigmund’s life.”
---------------
26. Tróndur turned away from the house,
Headed to where Sigmund was laying.

27. Tróndur said:
“I feel smoke from Sigmund’s trace.”

28. Tróndur tells them to have courage:
“I feel smoke from Sigmund’s foot.”

29. They walked by green landscape,
They waited by the gorge a while.

30. Sigmund suddenly sees on the other side,
Steingrím’s head lying on grass.

31. Sigmund went over to the other side again,
From Steingrím’s hands he took a sword.

32. Sigmund escaped north on the island,
Tróndur had manly words then.
---------------
33. Sigmund threw himself into the ocean,
Einar and Tórur the same way.

34. When Tróndur saw this,
Back to the boat he hurried.

35. He hurries back to the boat,
But he couldn’t reach Sigmund.

36. The three swim with high speed,
The currents are strong.

37. Tórur looked behind him:
“It looks like Einar can’t swim any more.”

38. Sigmund did the effort:
He took Einar on his back.

39. Tórur stretched Sigmund his hand:
“Now Einar has stopped breathing.”

40. Sigmund let go of Einar,
Suðuroy-fjord was his grave.

41. Sigmund swims, and his kinsman,
There’s still an nautical mile left to land.

42. Tórur laid himself against the waves.
“Now I have stopped in hand and foot.

43. You swim to land, don’t care about me!
I am gone, but save yourself!”

44. Sigmund answered, in the sea:
“My friend, we will not leave each other here.

45. We were together a lot,
We will not leave each other here.”

46. Sigmund was loyal to his words,
He laid Tórur on his back.

47. Sigmund swims by all his power:
“Now we have reached land.”

48. The waves broke them apart,
They took Tórur down to the bottom.

49. Sigmund was a fit man,
But his legs couldn’t bear him.

50. When he had swam the long way,
He silently lay down on seaweed.
---------------
51. Torgrímur owned Sandvík “in the old days,”
He looked outside one morning.

52. Torgrímur watched the seaweed:
“I think I see a red cloth.”

53. Torgrímur speaks to his two sons:
“You look and see if there’s anything more.”

54. In come the boys and tell,
A big man in seaweed lies.

55. A big man in seaweed laid,
No one more like Sigmund to look at. ???

56. Torgrímur took axe in hand,
Then he went down to the shore.

57. Torgrímur went down to the seaweed,
Powerless there Sigmund lays.

58. Torgrímur speaks to his lads:
“Sigmund’s gold ring shall be mine!

59. Boys, you take in his hair for me,
While I deliver the killing blow.

60. Boys, you take his hair and lift his head up
While I separate head from body.”

61. The boys hold in his hair,
While he gave him the fatal wound.

62. The boys hold his hair and lift his head up
While he separated head from body.

63. The gold ring they carried home to the house,
But the body they buried in sand and gravel.

64. Such an ending, Sigmund got,
His body no longer in the Faroes walked.
