Francis Poulenc - Capriccio (after Le bal Masqué) for Two Pianos, FP. 155 (1952)

In the early 1950s, Francis Poulenc composed numerous pieces for Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale, two American pianists affectionately referred to as \"les boys.\" These included substantial works like the Sonata for Two Pianos, which Poulenc dedicated to the two men \"as much with friendship as with admiration,\" along with several shorter works that also reflect this friendship. The Capriccio d'après le bal masqué was one of these; although it is dedicated to Samuel Barber, whose piano music Poulenc held in high esteem, it is hard to imagine it coming into being without the presence of \"les boys.\" This Capriccio adapts the finale of Le bal masqué, Poulenc's cantata profana, to texts by Max Jacob, and remains essentially faithful to the original for baritone and chamber orchestra: carnival rhythms and playfulness in the opening, a collapse into a melancholy middle section, a return to the jerky rhythms, and eventually the music of the opening to close. However, Poulenc luxuriates in the expanded palette of the two pianos rather than slavishly imitating orchestral effects, justifying this piece's existence by presenting it as nothing more than a mere transcription.
