Written in 1957, this Elegy is dedicated to Dennis Brain, the famous British horn player that died tragically in his youth. The work is a 10-minute single movement. It begins Trés calme, with the solo horn making a lonely call. Suddenly, with the entrance of the piano, the horn engages in a burlesque march that ends in an upward sweep. Now the piano ruminates for a short while but then the march begins again. The horn goes back to its pensive beginning with the piano providing a harmonic background in an elegiac mood that continues all the way to the end of the piece. [allmusic.com]
