The so-called ‘Sonata’ in B flat, actually a single Allegro movement, was composed in 1812, when Schubert was fifteen years old. It is far more conservative than the later music for piano trio, but an extremely polished piece of writing. The occasion for it was probably one of the musical evenings in Schubert’s home, during a weekend off from the Imperial Seminary, where he and his two brothers were then students.
