I can think of no recorded performance of this rhapsody that surpasses it and very few that come close to equaling it. Cziffra does not play the rhapsody as a throw away showpiece into which to wrap his cadenzas. And notice the judicious use of the sustaining pedal. How many pianists, when playing certain technically challenging passages such as the section with the treacherous leaps in the left hand that accompanies the ascending A and F# major scales in the right hand, suddenly nail the pedal to the floor or simplify such passages by making them sound, to the uninitiated ear, as more difficult. Cziffra plays these passages with great clarity as Liszt wrote them. Of course, this performance was recorded in 1956 when tape recording technology made note perfect recordings possible. However, as David Dubal writes in "The Art of the Piano," (Cziffra was) "one of the most remarkable piano technicians of all time."
