Gratissima virginis species

astringendo pectus, cum ubere.

Gaude gloriosa,
super omnes speciosa.

O you who admire
maidens, if we are to be
worthy of wedding the
choicest of virgins,
when we have married her
she must be greatly loved.

This [maiden] is beautiful
to contemplate, humble in bearing,
and virtuous in her conduct,
this other of yours is foul,
too harsh in her daring
and scornful of the virtues.

This maiden is light, you are cloud
she is the swift eagle,
you are slithering snakes;
she reigns in eternity,
you are paupers in this
sad vale of heaviness.

This royal virgin
is a sweet lover
and my loving wife.
I am a king, she a queen.

What more shall we say?
We who have studied all things
have chosen a fitting maiden
and the rose before the thorn.

Exert yourselves, therefore,
for time is slipping away
and death pursues us,
O serve this maiden. Call upon her,
for if you are negligent
you shall not see her,
the glory which you desire.
O make haste!

O most beautiful figure of a virgin
who is adorned with purity of body,
you have healed the innermost region
of my heart with the sweetest wound,
instilling the passion of love therein
which knows no way out of my breast.
To wound me with a similar beautiful pain
you have given birth to a pure son.
O queen, embrace him who is yours,
and draw him to your breast.
O king of kings, join eye to eye
and mouth to mouth for a kiss,
and breathe a word on your lips
which, once received, may make this goddess flesh.
