Before the internet became as much a part of our daily existence as breathing oxygen, music scenes tended to form in localised clusters around the world, with distinct sounds, rhythms and ideas being innovated, copied and evolved by people who knew each other, the most popular of them emerging as fully established genres and sub-genres. If you weren’t local to these scenes, the most you could hope for was for something you were interested in to get airplay on a local radio station or join specialist music communities trading tapes and CD's via air mail. Now, almost all music is available to us at the touch of a trackpad and exists everywhere we turn, an unstoppable force. Localised music scenes still exist but are hanging on by a thread, as now scenes can form just by a couple of enthusiastic people sharing new tracks between each other through Soundcloud/Bandcamp/Email/wherever -- even if they live on the opposite site of the world. And if more and more people are enthusiastic as the original people trading these ideas, full blown communities and new genres can emerge again, all a part of our virtual existence.. it is very much real. But as such things occur so fast online, such ideas can evolve, split off and form into new communities, spreading virally to the point where practically no one can keep trace of what’s going on anymore. And now with the use of easily cracked yet super advanced music software and cheap but powerful hardware, so many new ideas pop up by new artists all the time that new genres can explode and disappear in the blink of an eye, evolving into new territory before you have even had a chance to listen to anything. I think now with what is happening, we are approaching a sphere of singularity in music, in which you will find such a diverse palette within this that it has become entirely fruitless to try and justify your music via genre anymore. Just do whatever the hell you want and stop worrying about trying to fit in because no matter how weird or offbeat you are, you’ll inevitably find more people like you to share your time with, and that is ultimately what counts. What is amazing about many of the artists In this mix is that they are all approaching similar ideas of sticky compression, experimental reverb, glitching synths, mutated beats, punishing bass and dreamy ambience, all at the same time despite coming from extremely different backgrounds. You will find tracks by artists from techno, ambient, IDM, footwork, dubstep, hip hop, future beats, vaporwave and even hardvapour backgrounds. You will find artists who come from all over the world, from America to Iran, from Venezuela to Italy, from Ukraine to Japan and all the way back to my home nation of the UK. You will find artists who are fortunate enough to live off what they do to those who have barely made a penny and just do it for the love of it. All of this is exemplifying the fluidity of how music can be whatever you as a listener or myself as an artist and DJ wants it to be.. There are no rules anymore -- only everything. So what did I want this mix to be? I love the range of different sounds here, and I think experimental electronic producers in general are right at the forefront of what’s happening in music today, reflecting not only the way we approach music is changing for the better, but the cyberpunk dream world reality we are increasingly finding ourselves in. This music is very futuristic in sound, but now we are truly living in the world of tomorrow, so this is music of the present day. Many of the artists here certainly inspired my new album OMNIA, inspired my own life too, and this is my way of showing appreciation to them for their innovation -- and hopefully introduce those who listen to this to some new artists in the process as well.
