In December 1920, the French journal La Revue musicale published a special ‘tombeau’ issue to commemorate the death of Debussy in 1918, for which several composers were invited to write a short work. Stravinsky’s initial thoughts were for a vocal work, but the short piano chorale which appeared in La Revue musicale entitled ‘Fragment des Symphonies d'instruments à vent’ indicates that his plans had both changed and expanded. He intended to write a much more substantial tribute to Debussy and this little piano rarity eventually became the final section of the Symphonies of Wind Instruments.
