Lindisfarne AD 793 Vikings from the western coast of Norway attack the monastery of Lindistarne, Scotland. This is later to be seen as the beginning of the era of the Vikings. The assault is motivated by Charlemagnes Christian army and their campaigns to suppress the Saxon and European cultures in favour of a moncrchy-based Christian culture. By actively charging and raiding the centres of the new cult, the monasteries and churches along the coast of Brittain and France, the Vikings hope to scare the Cristians away from trying to impose their religion and monarchy onto the Scandinavian countries
(Depart:) First break of day, we riase our sails and set out rom the shore With the dawn at our backs we watch the land of our fathers sink into the sea The ravens of Odin will wait off the shore, 'till they see our sails reappear Fall from the sky Rise from the sea March towards our fate The spear has been thrown
Raging wind, roaring waves, thwo hundred men at the ores Fighting our way across the great sea to battle the foreign white god Ou cry of war shall tear the walls of the house they buildt to the sky We battle for glory and our ways of old, and peace in our great fathers land We come by surprise Out of the morning mist Our swords shine with the first rays of light The battle begins
(From the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle:) "In this year fierce, foreboding omens came over the land of Northumbria. There were excessive whirlwinds, lightning storms, and fiery fracons were seen flying in the sky/ These signs were followed by great famine, and on January 8th the ravaging of heathen men destroyed God's church at Lindisfarne."
(Alcuin the priest:) This morning of the year 793 a horde of barbarians attacked from the sea With the fury of demons and flaming swords They threw down our gates and attacked our Lord
(Battle:) We rise as dragons from the fog of the sea, burning the house of their god Our swords are swift, our courage strong - Fueled by the gods of the land Thunar gives strength to our cause, and victory to our blades The holy men flee and beg for their lives, we turn the hills red with their blood!
(Alcuin the priest:) Never before has such terror appeared as brought by the winds form the pagan lands The blood of our saints spilled unto the groud The altar of God's church defaced and torn down
(Victory:) Steel against stone and blood follows blood, the way of our kindred prevail Foreign god beaten in ashes and smoke, we drink to the god with one eye! Leaving as swiftly as we have come, our ships with the dragons hide Now heavy with gold will allways stir fear in the followers of the new god
We came by their surprise, out of the morning mist Our great fathers fought with us in the battle of their god Fall towards the sky, rise out from the sea Our swords red with their blood, ou battle (has) just begun...
