It is the first work written under the new system created by the composer. Dedicated to the great explorer who discovered America, on this work, it is intended to describe the impressions of fright, amazement and joy experienced when revealing the mystery of a brand new universe.
A harp in sixteenth-tones, a flute in quarter-tones and a string quartet, create the sonorous atmosphere on which the voice develops delicate arabesques written in quarter-tones.
The work was premiered on Febrary 15, 1925 in Mexico, on the very first performance of this new music in the world, during which the enormous emotional possibilities of the harp in sixteenth-tones were discovered. Months later, several works by Julián Carrillo were performed successfully in New York and Philadelphia, with Leopold Stokowski conducting. Those works included a Concertino for small instrumental ensamble with symphonic orchestra.
The Preludio a Colón (Prelude to Colombus), was conducted by the composer, on the new UNESCO hall at Paris, in 1958 before an enthusiastic audience.
