Sad Hour
[Traurige Stunde, No. 5]
Not every day of travel is lovely and festive. Sometimes I am seized by dread, groundless unrest, and my heart becomes heavy. Is it not presumptuous to travel from curiosity alone, to press into other people’s lives only to see what it is like there? What if they were to ask me: «Well, stranger, traveler! What are you bringing us? What do you want here? No useful business? No reason? Only curiosity?» What then? And what if, as a punishment, everything at home were to go wrong, my home rapidly clogged with confusion and disarray, what is happening? At night, I lie in my unfamiliar room, wide awake, the ghosts around me growing higher and higher, growing and smothering me. Wandering brings us even closer to death than the hours themselves, and every farewell, even from the meekest object, is a slice of death, the definitively dead. One thing less in our narrow circle! Everything is ground down and then gone, irrecoverably gone! The early morning light dispels the ghosts. After a brief sleep the sun will perhaps summon us to new undertakings, and the gloom is forgotten!
