Our Wine [Unser Wein, No. 8] Our wine besieges the Alps from south and east – the white wine of Vienna and Gumpoldkirchen, from Krems and the Wachau, then those from Baden, Soos, Pfaffstätten, and the red wine from Vöslau, and the alpine growth from Luttenberg further to the south of our Styria. Usually despised by outsiders, like most things we have, because the gift is too plain in its externals. Our wine is precious only to those who know where to find it. Nothing is lovelier than to walk through the vineyard in early summer, where little men in green clamber up on gray poles, busy, silent, bright, on unexpectedly steep slopes. White cottages, neat and delicate, interrupt their meek pilgrimage, and far up, where the dark evergreen forest prevails, a narrow vineyard presses between the pines, offering itself to the sun ...
