It was 7pm but the sun hadn’t gone to sleep yet She was standing at the bar, crowded out by her friends But, every time i looked towards her, they parted like a biblical sea. I walked over and asked her to dance and she pointed at the ceiling And said ‘hey, this is my favourite song.’ We moved to the middle of the floor, and I swung her around to the beat Of everyone’s quiet chatterings.
My bravado sank and I held her close enough to kiss But far enough away so that she wouldn’t feel the sweat of fear Approaching the fabric of my shirt threatening to drown us both out. And for a breath moment I opened my eyes, moved past all the scared thoughts Pulsing through my veins, everything went dark and silent As if we were the only people left in this word.
We sat down after and she asked me if I had any tattoos And I said ‘sure’ and unbuttoned my shirt. She looked at me and asked ‘if meat is murder, then what is love?’ And I answered ‘without thought, cannibalism without the blood.’ We both laughed and she asked me if I liked joy division And I told her that if it means I get to married her, then I’ll to listen to just about anyone She revealed a smile that said ‘I’m probably about the coolest girl in the world’
And I watched her as she walked down the aisle with her father Both their eyes glistening with tears and as they reached me, I saw her give his arm a tight squeeze. Said ‘it’s okay, I’m safe here.’ We played our hands softly in each other’s. And, honestly with no hesitation Said our vowels ‘til death do us part’ But I secretly hoped by the time we were to die They will have found a cure for the ending of life Because I knew that with the strength of love that we had, Nothing else could ever pull us apart. And as we left the church that day, We looked at each other And I thought ‘there’s no way that this could ever change.’
