‘Do you love me?'
she whispered into the rim of his ear
the sweat of sex still moist around her lips.

It had started as a casual thing
a couple of times per week
with both of them smoking joints of weed
before she would leave
the stars still winking at the sleeping birds but now
she held him, her arms wrapped around his chest
as he heaved somewhat unnaturally into a sleep
until they would both awake the next morning
before making their excuses.

She rested her head on his
listening closely to his breathing which
steadily built into an avalanche of Carbon Dioxide exhaled,

she couldn’t see his face but
she imagined his eyes
wide awake
staring at the wall indignant
subversively willing her to shut the fuck up…
just go to sleep.

‘Just tell me you love me
or put me out of my misery’ she says
and he emits another deep exhale
the coffee brown of his breath
affecting the pale orange wallpaper
coming away from the wall closest to his head,

she turns over and looks for her dress
ready to leave
he whispers sweet nothings
to the girl in his dreams.
