Kilmaine Saints - Painting Paradise Square | Текст песни

Painting Paradise Square

Verse 1
We sailed away from Galway Bay in the darkest of the 40's
No regrets, no looking back, I don't need the misery
The ill and dead surround us as we cross the fierce Atlantic
What kept me going was a brand new start for me and my family
When we landed in Amerikay, the know-nothings didn't want us
“Nativists” my-ass, you just landed before me
We moved into a tenement in what was called the Five Points
It's called Paradise Square, but it smells like hell to me

Chorus
I suffered to get here and I’m not going to leave
And if you knock me down, you'd best be sure I'm dead
'Cause when I get back on me feet, and I promise you that I will
I'll steal your life and use your blood to paint Paradise Square!

Verse 2
Well me dear auld husband’s dead and gone, it's going on three years now
He worked his fingers to the bone, then he worked himself to death
He fought to make a better life for me and his dear children
When chasing down your dreams there's no such thing as rest
So now it's up to me to keep our dreams alive
The boys are far too young to work, but old enough to steal
I cooked, I cleaned, I'd watch your kids, I’d even do the washing
But I fell down the stairs in the tenement square, now the boys look after me

Chorus
I suffered to get here and I’m not going to leave
And if you knock me down, you'd best be sure I'm dead
'Cause when I get back on me feet, and I promise you that I will
I'll steal your life and use your blood to paint Paradise Square!

Verse 3
Well mammy's dead and it's been a long time since me da has left the living
Me brothers have all since moved out to start their families
There's not much left for me in this place so I guess I'll seek me fortune
I'll go and join the Union side and fight for this country
It's hard to want to die for a land that doesn't want me
But harder yet to work the mills and mines and factories
But if I make it home alive, well then I'll know I've won
The battle to find a place in this world for me own

Chorus
