No19 take a detour into downtempo indie-funk excellence for their surprising but exquisite next release, Art Department presents MartinaTopley Bird Featuring Mark Lanegan & Warpaint Crystalised. The track is a complete re-imagining of The xxs modern classic of the same name. Here though, it is masterfully re-built from the bottom up with Art Departments trademark production, Warpaints instrumentation and vocals from Martina Topley Bird and celebrated American singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan. It comes with remixes from French luminary Agoria and close label associates Deniz Kurtel, Dixon, as well as a rework from Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper, under their Directors Cut guise. There are two versions from Directors Cut (Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper), the first is a Signature Mix and realigns the track for dancefloor purposes. Its bouncy, airy and lush with gentle-jazz chords that emphasis the sweetness of the original versions vocals from Topley Bird, whilst a dub is also provided. Former Infine boss and revered French producer Agoria then turns his hand to the track, slowing it down to a beautifully melancholicpiece of deep house complete with heart-wrenchingly draped piano chords. Its a sublime remix of an already sublime track and Crosstown Rebels and Wolf + Lamb associate Deniz Kurtels version is just as special. This version is darker and more roughshod roundthe edges, as is often Kurtels way: theres great swing in the drums and moody vibes pervade from start to finish, with the vocal nowsounding suitably ominous in the midst of it all. Finally, there is an exclusive Dixon re-edit of Agoria's remix!
