Overview: Memorization and Concentration

As you approach Mount Rushmore, you notice the faces of four presidents sculpted into the rocks: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. All these men faced challenges as they governed the country. Their powers of concentration and memorization had to be sharp as they dealt with the complex national issues of their time.

Being able to concentrate and memorize important material are two important keys to success in school and work. Students who can concentrate earn higher grades on tests. They also gain much more from the college experience.

For example, Gregg is a chemistry major with a 3.8 grade point average. He is carrying 17 units this semester and works 20 hours a week. His schedule is very demanding and his courses require him to process and memorize a great deal of scientific information. Gregg has kept such a high G.P.A. because he has learned a variety of memory techniques that help him study efficiently.

In this lesson, you too will learn strategies that will help you manage your study time and remember information you've learned in your classes or your job.

Now, on to Mount Rushmore, where you will learn a bit more about the presidents carved there in stone, as well as a few others. You will also read about some very important social issues that developed during their time in office.
