Women are taught in society to be small, unassuming, and unheard. These gendered ideas are put into our heads at an early age and have a big impact that usually goes unnoticed. I am constantly asking myself, “Am I in the way?” or “Have I been talking too much?” These can be good things to be asking yourself in certain settings, but the harmful affects those ideas have on women and girls can lead to believing in strict gender roles, a decrease in confidence, or life threatening eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

These attitudes of “how much space to I displace” do not disappear in punk. I constantly see women standing in the back or to the sides at shows. I myself felt completely out of place when I first started fronting Night Witch. I have slowly been learning how to take up the space that I thought belonged to the boys. Although it is important for women to feel empowered to do these things, it is also important for men to realize how much space they are taking up. Whether it be at shows or on the bus, take a look at your surroundings and reflect on how much space you are occupying. In order to work together to make punk better, we must first work on ourselves and destroy the preconceived notions of gender we have learned to accept. Destroy the bro in your head.
