The translation of the word Shabbat from Hebrew is \"rest\" or \"cessation\". According to Exodus 20:11 King James Version (KJV):\"For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.\"
On this day Jews remember the traditional creation of the heavens and the earth in six days and the Exodus of the Hebrews, and look forward for coming of Messiah. As we learned the Torah and all Jewish traditions set to music, the song Shabes was no different. This song was written
by Mordechai Gebiritig, the greatest Jewish composer and writer of all time!
The Shabes table was one of the most musical places in Jewish Eastern Europe. Jews sing this song at home right before the kidesh, a Shabes blessing chanted over a cup of wine that marks the beginning of the meal. Shabbat is considered by Jews to be the most priceless tradition!
