This song (the title of which translates as ‘Birthday’) was originally performed by Cretan lyra player and singer Stelios Mpikakis. A zeimbekiko with disarmingly grim lyrics, Genethlia captures the crux of human suffering like no other song. The closing lyrics roughly translate as ‘God if I knew what day I would die, I would celebrate a birthday for my death as well.’
